Growing in Coco Coir: What to Buy in Ireland

Coco coir is the medium a lot of growers move to once soil starts feeling slow and they want more say over what the plant gets. It sits right between soil and a full water system: faster growth than soil, more control than soil, and a good deal more forgiving than running roots in a reservoir. The catch is that it only behaves if you treat it as its own thing - not as dirt. Here's why coco is worth the switch, and exactly what to buy to run it properly.

What is coco coir and why do growers switch to it?

Coco is shredded, processed coconut husk. It holds water and air in a ratio roots genuinely love, and because that structure stays open even when it's soaked, it's far harder to overwater than soil. It's inert, which is the bit that confuses people - it holds no nutrients of its own, so everything the plant eats comes from your feed. That sounds like extra work, and at first it is, but it's also the whole appeal: nothing in the medium is fighting your feeding plan, so you get clean, repeatable, high-control results. Feed it well and coco rewards you with vigour soil can't match.

We stock the two coco mediums most Irish growers run: Canna Coco Professional Plus 50L, washed and buffered and ready to plant straight into, and BioBizz Coco-Mix for growers who want an organic-leaning coco. Browse the full coco coir range here.

What nutrients do you need for coco coir?

Because coco is inert, you feed a nutrient designed for it - not a soil bottle. Coco-specific nutrients are formulated for the lower pH and the daily feeding that coco wants, and they account for the fact that coco grabs onto certain elements before the plant can. The simplest, most reliable route is a matched two-part coco line.

The one we point most coco growers to is Canna Coco A+B - a single base feed built specifically for coco that carries the plant from veg through flower. Pair it with a coco-suitable bloom booster when you hit flower and you've a complete schedule. See the full Canna Coco nutrient range for the boosters and additives.

Do you need CalMag for coco?

Yes! In every feed, and this is the single most common thing beginners skip. Coco naturally binds calcium and magnesium onto its fibres, grabbing those elements before your plant can reach them. Run a perfectly mixed feed without added calcium and magnesium and you'll still watch the plant show deficiency - yellowing, brown-spotted lower leaves - by about week three, because the medium keeps stealing from the plate. A dedicated CalMag supplement added to every feed solves it. Don't treat it as optional in coco; treat it as part of the base recipe.

How do you feed and water coco?

Two habits change from soil. First, frequency: coco isn't run on soil's wet-and-dry cycle - you feed it daily, sometimes twice a day in flower, always to 10 - 20% runoff. That runoff carries excess salts away and keeps the root zone clean. Water it like soil and salts build, pH drifts and the plant locks out. Second, pH: coco runs at the hydro range, 5.8 - 6.2, not soil's 6.0 - 7.0. Feed at soil pH in coco and you'll lock nutrients out even with the right bottle. A reliable pH pen is worth its weight here b our pH and EC meters take the guesswork out.

How do you set coco up?

Buy it pre-buffered - both Canna Coco and BioBizz Coco-Mix come ready to plant, which saves you soaking and rinsing it yourself. Most growers mix coco around 70/30 with perlite for extra drainage and air to the roots, then run it in fabric pots. After that it's down to consistency: coco rewards a steady daily feed and punishes neglect, so it suits a grower ready to show up every day rather than someone after a set-and-forget soil pot. If daily feeding in coco feels natural, you're also halfway to a reservoir system whenever you fancy the jump.

Pop into DIG and we'll set you up with a coco kit

If you're moving from soil to coco for the first time, the easiest start is a matched set -  medium, A+B base, a bloom booster and CalMag - so nothing in the schedule fights itself. DIG is Ireland's largest grow shop, based in Dublin, with the full coco range stocked and collection available in store. Tell us your tent size and plant count and we'll size the kit with you.

FAQ

Do I need CalMag for coco coir?
Yes, in every feed. Coco binds calcium and magnesium on its fibres, so without added CalMag the plant shows deficiency even when your nutrient mix is otherwise correct.

What nutrients should I use for coco?
A coco-specific line such as Canna Coco A+B, designed for coco's lower pH and daily feeding, plus a coco-suitable bloom booster in flower and CalMag every feed.

How often do I water plants in coco?
Daily, and sometimes twice a day in flower, always to 10 - 20% runoff. Coco isn't run on soil's wet-and-dry cycle and shouldn't be left to dry right out.

What pH should coco coir be?
5.8 - 6.2, the hydro range, lower than soil's 6.0 - 7.0. Feeding at soil pH in coco leads to lockouts.

Where can I buy coco coir and coco nutrients in Ireland?
DIG (Dublin Indoor Gardening) stocks Canna Coco, BioBizz Coco-Mix, the full Canna Coco nutrient range and CalMag, with collection in Dublin and delivery across Ireland.
